PRAYER JOURNEY GUIDELINES

1.  Prepare in advance, both physically and spiritually for the assignment. Do historical research on the places you are going. Are you supposed to take a tambourine, salt, bread, wine, trumpet, banners? Give a copy of your research to the leader in advance if possible as well as to all other participants.

2.  Take your Bible, paper and pencil.

3.  Arrive at the meeting place on time, ready to go.

4.  Don't wait for the leader to say, "Let's go" to decide you need to go to the bathroom. Take care of your personal needs in such a way as to not inconvenience the entire group. Emergencies call for exceptions but don't cause one by thoughtlessness.

5.  Double check all forms of transportation - airline departures, rental cars, etc. Make sure vehicles are adequately prepared for the journey.

6.  Pray with your eyes open unless your group is not around other people.

7.  Quietly check any guidance you receive with the leader before speaking it out to the entire group. If you want to include a specific site, talk to the leader first before announcing it to the entire group. If possible, tell the leader before the journey.

8.  Be aware that the leader is aware of more than you are regarding time, others in the group, directions given by authority over them, etc. and extend grace.

9.  Be sensitive to those who are less experienced than you in taking prayer journeys as well as those who are more experienced.

10. Do not talk about past assignments so as to cause those who did not experience them to feel less-than, or to exclude them. There is no place for hierarchy among intercessors. Make a point of including people who are new to you. Prayer journeys are no place for cliques.

11. Stay focused, even when en route to another location. Pray, listen to praise music, talk about the assignment, etc. but stay focused. And remember, meal times are not a break.

12. Be careful of  people you meet along the way. Are you to talk to them? What do you share, if anything? Are you to minister to them or they to you? What is God saying through them?

13. Be careful about religious grammar with those you meet. When you find out they are a believer or a church member, don't assume anything. Let them talk.

14. Do not go on a prayer journey without an open schedule. Leaders try to estimate how long it will last but even they don't know what God will do. People on prayer journeys MUST be flexible and prepared for anything. Is it a journey of several nights? Pack enough vitamins, medicine, underwear, etc. for extra days.

15. You may join the group late or leave the group early ONLY with ADVANCE permission from the leader. Don't assume that doing so will be OK.

16. If there is more than one leader, don't play one against the other. Get permission for late entries, early exits, new direction, etc., from both. They may have divided responsibilities or not have had a chance to communicate new information with each other.

17. Your leader will make mistakes. Extend grace.

18. Others will be insensitive and do things wrong. Extend grace to them. A prayer journey is not the time or place to release your anger or to gripe about each other; it is a time to be flexible.

19. Unless you are truly sick, don't tell the leader that you just "feel" that the Lord wants you to not participate in a portion of the journey (if it's a long one). He sent you on the assignment to work with the group, not to be a lone ranger.

20. Drink plenty of water.

21. If you have a medical condition that requires a set time for food intake, carry snacks with you. Don't insist that the whole group cater to your needs.

22. If the journey is one of several days and you have a medical condition (high blood pressure, diabetes, hypoglycemia, epilepsy, etc.) make sure the leader(s) and your roommate know about it.

23. If you are exhausted, rest.

24. Keep you leader(s) informed about individual incidences that happen to you. They may  prove to give critical pieces to the puzzle of what God is doing.

25. KEEP GOD’S SECRETS. Share with others only what God allows to be told.
