INTRODUCTION TO DELIVERANCE

Lifted from the teaching of Dr. Henry Malone, Doris Wagner, Chuck Pierce, Trever Dearing, David Wilkerson and others through many years.

Deliverance is the most misunderstood and the least practiced. Where deliverance is practiced, there is revival. (Guatemala had the highest % Christians - 40-45% in 1999.) If revival is accompanied by deliverance, it is more likely to be sustained. (Argentina is in its 22th year of revival (2006). Examples: Carlos Andecondia incorporates deliverance in his campaigns by coming after the satanic so they manifest. Then stretcher bearers pick the people up, discretely take them to a tent where there are chairs in groups of 3 for two counselors per person who lead them to Jesus, then deliver them. Another church takes new converts on a 3-day retreat to teach them what has happened to them, basic doctrines and administer deliverance.

If you’re going to try to help someone, be aware that Satan has a strategy to capture you. There are multiple reasons why demons inhabit a person. It’s not just to take captive the person; it’s to use them to capture others.

Everything is not spiritually spooky; we just have to be aware.

Two principles in the universe:

1.     The principle of God’s authority.

2.     The principle of Satanic rebellion.

Isaiah 14:12-15 - Lucifer said I will 5 times!

God placed all the created things on the earth under the authority of Adam that he might have dominion over them. We’re the only part of creation made to rule over things. Then God placed Adam under His authority by giving him do’s and don’ts so that he might learn obedience and obey authority. ONLY THE ONE WHO IS UNDER AUTHORITY CAN HAVE AUTHORITY - and Jesus equated faith with the recognition of authority. Matt. 8:5-10.

Adam’s authority and dominion was a gift and legally his. What he did with it was his responsibility.

Eve talked back to the serpent, relayed God’s orders and added to them. Compare Genesis 3: 3 with 2:17: God didn’t say, “nor shall you touch it.” This addition became the hook by which the serpent was able to snare her. If you have a place in your mind that is unsantified, the enemy will hook you right there. Then the serpent told a lie - “you will be like God.” They were already like God! 1:26  Eve gave the fruit to Adam who was with her. She didn’t have to go looking for him. He had heard the conversation all along but said nothing until it was too late. Men have fallen into this sin of waiting till it’s too late, ever since. Truth always leads to freedom. The lie always leads to bondage. You can tell when Satan’s telling you a lie by watching to see if his mouth is moving.

Adam lost all of his legal rights - rights to his person as well as to his domain. Thus Satan was given legal authority to rule over man and the world. 2 Corinthians 4:4 the god of this age. Ephesians 2:2- the prince of the power of the air. John 12:31 - the ruler of this world. God told Satan He’d eat dust and that’s what man is made of. He was saying Satan’s food would be man. Satan became the legitimate possessor of Adam and the legal ruler of the earth, God had no moral right to arbitrarily annul it. Romans 5:19

A member of Adam’s race had to be found who could qualify to wrestle Adam’s lost heritage and dominion from Satan.  The government of the earth had been given to MAN. It was lost by a MAN. It could be legally recovered only by a MAN. Hence the Incarnation. As conceived by the Holy Spirit, Jesus was sinless and Satan had no claim upon him. Born of a woman made Him an authentic human - able to reclaim what was lost legally. (That’s why people who deny the virgin birth deny the plan of redemption. That’s also why Satan’s work was cut out for him when Jesus came on the scene - he needed to pressure Him to rebel and act independently to get out from under God’s authority just once. Just one small thought of rebellion against the Father was all that it would have taken. Jesus’ humanness is also why Jesus had to fight this battle and overcome AS A MAN WHO REMAINED UNDER AUTHORITY. He, like us, learned obedience through the things which He suffered and remained holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners. Hebrews 7:26-27 Hebrews 5:7-9  Hebrews 4:15  2 Corinthians 5:21  His anguish in the Garden was the anguish of a pure soul who knew no sin, facing the injustice of being MADE sin.

With his decision in the garden, facing the Eastern Gate where He will one day walk through in triumph, the crisis passed. He laid down His life at that point and from then on, Satan, unknowingly, dealt only with a shell. 1 Corinthians 2:7-8.

This sacrifice canceled all of Satan’s legal claims upon the earth and the entire human race. He no longer has any rights or claims because the Father poured out the full force of His wrath against sin on His only begotten Son. He did this in order to obtain a family of lovers of His very own. A family that is born, not created. When He did, He disarmed principalities and powers and made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. Colossians 2:13-15 Jesus did more than whip Satan, He took all the weapons. According to the Webster dictionary, “spoiled” means to completely disarm a defeated foe. Psalm 107:16  Revelation 1:18

Now, all authority belongs to Jesus. Matthew 28:18  And He gives us authority in His name. Luke 10:17-19  Ephesians 1:19-23  WITH HIM we are

  • Crucified - Romans 6:6-7

  • Buried and raised - Ephesians 2:4-6 (past tense used)

  • Exalted, enthroned and hidden -  Colossians 3:1-3

We are now so identified with Him that He calls us His body. As we submit to Jesus Christ, we have His authority. So……….why don’t we see more evidence of it in human life and world affairs?

1. There’s a part of us that does not want to go forward. We have to die until we just get to the point of, “the gates of hell will not prevail against it.” The Matthew 12:43-45 passage about the unclean spirit going to dry places then coming back with seven more is talking about a heart that has been cleansed. When the evil spirit came back, he saw the heart had been swept clean, but there had been no change. It wasn’t filled with the gospel or with prayer; it was just as he had left it. Jesus was talking to people who hated Him and He was telling them why they were hating Him; why such religious people were able to break their own law by killing an innocent Man whose only desire was to save, comfort and deliver them. It was because Satan had overcome them and was directing every action because they didn’t want to go forward. 2 Peter 2:19-21  It’s not enough to profess to live for Christ; what is our practice? Peter is talking to people who had escaped the pollution of the world vs. 20; had full knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ vs. 20; had known the way of righteousness vs. 21; had heard the holy commandment delivered to them vs. 21; they’d feasted with the saints vs. 13.

2.  IGNORANCE Hosea 4:6  John 14:12-17              Matthew 11:12

Satan does not give up one inch of ground UNTIL we force him to. We must…

  • know we have the victory

  • stand in faith until

  • we experience the victory

Only then does Satan flee. James 4:7                      2 Corinthians 2:14

Since he doesn’t want to flee, he uses trickery, deception, fear and bluff. The reason God has not yet put Satan away completely is because He wants to give us “on-the-job” training in overcoming. We need practice in overcoming. We need this because we forget

  • that we have passed from Satan’s authority so we let him threaten and oppress us.

  • that we are part of Christ’s body and that Satan is subject to us.

  • who we are instead of who we were.

  • that he has no legal right.

INDIVIDUALLY THE RESPONSIBILITY IS OURS TO LAY DOWN THE SATANIC PRINCIPLE OF REBELLION, TO SUBMIT OURSELVES COMPLETELY TO GOD, AND TO USE OUR WEAPONS TO TAKE BACK THE GROUND SATAN AND HIS HOST OF EVIL SPIRITS HAVE STOLEN FROM US. Colossians 1:12-13

We are a church filled with so many bruised, battered and oppressed people - casualties - that we can’t be trained into an effective army. Jesus said, "The  Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are  oppressed." Luke 4:18

Deliverance can be a giant step toward a walk of freedom. But we can’t walk in freedom until we experience freedom. It wasn’t enough for Jesus to call Lazarus from the grave. He had to have his grave clothes removed; he had to be “loosed.” As we receive healing and deliverance, we will be able to bring healing and deliverance to others around us who so desperately need it.

Jesus spent 1/3 of His ministry in deliverance. As you read these stories, it becomes obvious that a large percentage of these people were people who knew the Word of God, and were trying to follow His commands. This is because everything in the visible world has a root in the invisible spirit world. That’s why 1 Peter 5:8-9a

TWO WAYS SATAN HAS ACCESS INTO OUR LIVES

1.  Intrusion - 5% of our problems - Webster: “the act of pushing or thrusting in; the act of putting or coming in without being asked or wanted. These are the fiery darts. This is the attack from the outside - no legal right to be there. James 4:7-8 deals with intrusion. We have spiritual armor to protect us from intrusion. Ephesians 6:12-18  By intrusion, Satan’s goal is to get our attention off of God, stop our communion with Him and get us to focus on him or our problem. Solution:

A. Focus on God.

B. Praise

C. Make sure it is an intrusion - not that we’ve given “place” to him.

D. Ask God for His wisdom, power and presence and get His instructions on what to do.

E. Remember that the problem is not people. They are not the enemy. IF SATAN CANNOT DEFEAT US, HE WILL OFTEN DEFEAT SOMEONE ELSE WHOSE DEFEAT WILL DEFEAT US.

F.  Look at the problem only long enough to tell God about it. Then keep walking. Satan’s assignment has never changed. It is to get man to break communion with God.

2.  Legal ground. This can be inherited. It’s usually not hard to tell the difference between good and evil. But it’s often hard to tell the difference between good and God - because we don’t have access to the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

LEGAL GROUND: Places where Satan has a right to be because I or someone else has given him that place. Ephesians 4:27 - nor give place to the devil - the epicenter of divination and witchcraft in the known world. Remember: fairness is a human concept. Justice is a God concept. 2 Peter 2:19 - a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him - self-centeredness can be our god.  Romans 6:16 - you are the sum total of everything you’ve sown in your life. If you continually go into the devil’s territory, you open your heart to him and give him place.

Example: The moment Samson walked through the gate of Gaza, the devil moved in! Satan could claim, “As long as you were on God’s side of the wall of fire, I couldn’t touch you, Samson. But when you walked into my territory, you were telling me you wanted what I have to offer. You wouldn’t have come here unless you were itching for what I’ve got. Now you’re in my territory - and you’re helpless. I’ve got you!”

Example: When we pick up pornography or watch a non-honoring-to-God movie.  Numbers 32:23 - Be sure your sin will find you out..

Legal ground has at least 5 doors.

1.     Disobedience (willful sin)

2.     Inner vows and judgments

3.     Curses

4.     Emotional trauma (or hurts)

5.     Unforgiveness

DISOBEDIENCE - 1 Samuel 15: 22-23 - pride and arrogance leave the door open to the devil. If we are not willing to admit we have been overpowered by the devil, we will keep looking for advice rather than deliverance.  Disobedience leads to deception and the devil has a way of distorting words. Saul in 1 Samuel 151-16-23  The more a person rebels, whether that rebellion is direct or delegated, the more control is given to demonic powers to control us. This is why rebellion is as witchcraft. There is no freedom in rebellion. When the pressure’s on, we crack if we let the door open by disobedience. Example: why there was no one in Israel to fight Goliath.

Many demons entered through disobedience in ourselves and/or our generations. If not resisted and broken, they will be passed down through our generations. Example: apathy and passivity are demons. Scripturally, we must resist them, get up and do something or we invite the demonic and pass it on. David had a generational iniquitous pattern from his ancestor Rahab. When he didn’t go to war like he was supposed to, he fell into that iniquitous sin with Bathsheba. The result was that it multiplied in his descendants to the point that his son lay with his father’s wives. Many iniquitous patterns are linked with covenant breaking - patterns like adultery, anger, suicide, abandonment.

We cannot break with words what we have caused by actions. We can’t escape the consequences of sin without getting rid of the sin. Obedience with a bad attitude reveals rebellion in our hearts. It's saying, “I’ll obey but that doesn’t mean I’ll like it.”  Rebellion is revealed by our response to God’s word. Is our obedience based on restraint and law? Or is it delight and life? Do we hunger to know Him and please Him? Or are we only interested in how He can please us?

How to know when our heart delights in God:

1.  Obedience is immediate.

2.  God’s will is honored above all else.

3.  There is no arguing, complaining or pouting.

4.  We search for the heartbeat of God.

5.  When God’s will is unclear, we wait until it is.

6.  We suffer the rejection of friends rather than displease God.

7.  We do not add or take away from what God says.

8.  There is an awe for God’s ways and wisdom.

Any sin can lead to a stronghold whether it is an attitude such as pride, an emotion such as anger or an action such as lying. Stronghold: a power base, a place of fortification set up by demonic forces in our lives either in soul or body. A stronghold has you - you don’t have it. There is a progression:

Experience > Emotions > Thoughts > More Emotions > More Thoughts > Further actions > Habit patterns > Way of life > Stronghold

INNER VOWS: a determination set with deep emotion by the mind and heart into all a person’s being in response to a person, experience or desire. It is a vow to ourselves - not to God or another person. I.e. I will never act like… My kids will never… This is why Jesus said let your yes be yes and your no be no, for whatever is more than these is from the evil one. Matthew 5:33-37  Characteristics of inner vows:

A.  Are usually based upon judgments of others. Matthew 7:7  Romans 2:1  Romans 14:4

B.  Always resists the normal maturing process and we don’t grow out of them even if we’ve forgotten them. They tie us to the past in an unhealthy way and bind us to a fleshly mindset.

C.  Cause us to make ourselves god in that when we make them, we take the control of our life from God and predetermine the way it will or will not be.

D.  Results may lie dormant until the right situation or person triggers them. I.e. vows against physical brothers may affect our relationships with spiritual brothers. Vows against our father or mother may affect our relationship with a spouse.

E.  Seem to be most powerful when they involve judgments against our parents.

CURSES: the calling down of evil on someone or something; to afflict; a judgment. Used 230 times in scripture. Can be from a previous generation. Can be compounded by our own actions. Can be a result of our own decisions. Galatians 3:10-14 Curses are a result of not obeying the commandments of the Lord. Deuteronomy 11:26-28

Results of curses:

  • cause frustration

  • can occur in various areas of our lives

  • have negative effects on personal relationships

  • affect history both visible and invisible

  • are not limited to the individual but spread

  • are transmitted by words James 3:6,9-10  Proverbs 11:9  Proverbs 15:4  Proverbs 18:21

  • tend to continue from generation to generation until they are canceled.

Physical objects may become vehicles for the spiritual power or curses or blessings to be transmitted. Exodus 20:4-5 Behind an object is an invisible force. If it is not of God, it will hook into a person wherever there is a hook. These objects can keep us bound so we need to go through the house, asking God to reveal anything that keeps us bound or that keeps us out of our ministry. Don’t take getting rid of objects lightly. Test for objects:

  • Inordinate affection for it.

  • Emotional tie

  • Link to generational bondages

  • Witchcraft

In the spiritual realm, you must be careful with your liberty and move only in the authority, the level and the boundary God has given you. Therefore, DON’T DESTROY YOUR SPOUSE'S THINGS.

Can be generational that give us a bent or propensity toward certain sins and bondages, which is iniquity. Iniquity: a bentness toward, rebellion, perversity, moral evil. A system of behavior, a way of life, often seems to possess a life of its own. In scripture, iniquity also includes all the evil consequences that iniquity brings in its train. Exodus 20:1-5  Deuteronomy 5:9  Numbers 14:18  1 Kings 21:29  Psalm 79:8  Jeremiah 32:18  (Interesting note, the curse of illegitimacy is for 10 generations and it will keep you from the presence of God. Deuteronomy 23:2  Ruth was the 10th generation from Lot. With her, the curse was broken).

Every people group has distinct bloodline curses that are not affected by environment or upbringing - i.e. adopted children

  • Irish - anger & bearing grudges

  • French and Italian - immorality

  • Scots - drunkenness

  • English - arrogance and conceit

  • Germans - pride.

The familiar spirit that the witch of Endor called up for Saul had been walking through Samuel’s family line. No witch has the power to call someone out of the presence of God.

Indications a curse might be in operation - if several are present or one tends to recur repeatedly:

1.  An absence of the Word of God.

2.  Mental and/or emotional breakdown. Deuteronomy 28:28

3.  Repeated or chronic sicknesses (especially if hereditary). Deuteronomy 28:22,27,35,59 lists consumption, fever, inflammation, severe burning fever, sword, scorching, mildew, pursuit, boils, tumors, scab and itching that can’t be healed, plagues, serious and prolonged sicknesses.

4.  Barrenness, a tendency to miscarry or related female problems. Deuteronomy 28:18

5.  Breakdown of marriage and family alienation. Deuteronomy 28:41  Malachi 4:5-6

6.  Continuing financial insufficiency. Deuteronomy 28:17,29,47,48

7.  Being accident-prone. Deuteronomy 28:29

8.  A history of suicides and unnatural or untimely deaths. Deuteronomy 28:26, 45, 53, 56

Causes of curses:

1.  There is a cause. Proverbs 26:2 If causeless, it can’t light but it can come in your direction. When you hear things out of the ordinary or against the word of God, you need to ask, where is this coming from?

THE SUM OF CHRISTIANITY AND THE CONDITIONS FOR ENJOYING THE BLESSINGS ARE LISTENING TO GOD’S VOICE AND DOING WHAT HE SAYS. Deuteronomy 28:1-2  John 10:27

2. Rebellion

  • Making images for religious purposes, acknowledging and/or worshipping false gods Exodus 20:4-5     Rachel in Genesis 31:32, 35:16-19

  • Not hearing God’s voice and not doing what He says. Deuteronomy 28:15-68

  • Being out from under authority and in rebellion to our authorities. Romans 13:1-2  Hebrews 13:17

  • All involvement with the occult. 1 Samuel 15:23  Galatians 5:20-21

  • Disrespect for parents.  Ephesians 6:1-3

  • All forms of oppression or injustice, especially when directed against the weak and the helpless. Deuteronomy 27:17-19

  • All forms of illicit or unnatural sex. Deuteronomy 27:20-23

  • Anti-Semitism. Genesis 12:3

  • Legalism, carnality or apostasy. Jeremiah 17:5-6 A shroud of death is always linked to legalism. Romans 8:2

  • Theft or perjury. Zechariah 5:1-4

  • Withholding from God money or other material resources to which He has a claim. Malachi 3:8-9

  • Self imposed curses  Matthew 12:36-37

  • Pledges or oaths that bind people to ungodly associations - i.e. freemasonry, sororities and fraternities.  Exodus 23:32

  • Curses sent by witches, warlocks, witch doctors, etc.  Ezekiel 13:17-23

  • Carnal talk directed against other people.  James 3:14-15

  • Manipulative prayers that accuse or seek to control other people. Proverbs 28:9

EMOTIONAL TRAUMA (HURTS) - a wound especially caused by a sudden physical injury or emotional shock that causes lasting damage to the psychological, spiritual or emotional development of a person. Luke 4:18  Remember: the cause of bruises is bleeding on the inside. Examples:

  • physical, mental or sexual abuse

  • violence

  • mugging

  • abandonment

  • accidents

  • rape

  • rejection

  • fearful experiences

  • domination/control

  • molestation

  • divorce

  • death of close family members

  • near-death experiences

God’s grace is the same whether your trauma was not your fault or if it was the result of your own choices. Supernatural healing of emotional wounds by the power of God is absolutely essential to take away the ground of the enemy. Isaiah 61:2-3  Ashes aren’t worth much except to God and He paid for them with the death of His Son.

We have all been victimized. However it is our choice to remain a victim because we are responsible for our own responses. Joel 2:25

UNFORGIVENESS - the refusal to let go or to excuse the debt owed by another or to lift it away; to hold on to an offense. Forgiveness is a command. Matthew 6:14-15  Mark 11:25-26  There is no alternative to bitterness but forgiveness. Unforgiveness brings prison, torment and bondage.  Matthew 18:21-35 - the master delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.

In this story, the one was a non-payable debt. The other was a payable debt. Our debt to God is not payable. What others owe us is payable. FORGIVE IT. Don’t rationalize or deceive yourself about forgiveness. Jesus said we’d be delivered to the tormentors and that there is no relief until we forgive.

Forgiveness is humanly impossible. John 15:5 without Me you can do nothing. Excuses we use to not forgive:

  • They don’t deserve it.

  • When they repent.

  • When they realize how much they’ve hurt me.

  • I’ll forgive this time but they’d better never do it again. (probation)

  • I’ll forgive but I don’t want to see them again or have anything to do with them.

Forgiveness on an intellectual level is not enough. It must be from the heart. The only way we can forgive is with God’s power. It’s a God thing. We get it when we realize truly how much we’ve been forgiven. We are to forgive as God forgave us. Colossians 3:13. There must be a complete release by the will AND from the emotions. We must bless and pray for the person who has wronged us to complete the forgiveness cycle.  Matthew 5;44  Luke 6:28  Romans 12:14
