HOW TO HAVE A DAILY QUIET TIME Practice the presence of God. Wake up with Him on your mind. If necessary, make yourself a sign or turn the clock radio to a Christian station. Give Him time. It does not matter if your time alone with God is in the morning, evening, middle of the day or night, God will meet you when you draw near to Him. James 4:8 Ask God to show you when He wants to meet with you. Be honest about what you can handle. Don’t try to spend an hour a day if you have never spent time alone with Him before. Begin with whatever amount of time you can handle. As you do, your time will automatically become longer as He draws you to Himself. Trust Him for guidance. Ask God what to read. He will show you by placing a “tugging” at your heart to read a specific book in the bible or to follow the scripture readings in a devotional book or prayer book. BE SURE YOU DO NOT SUBSTITUTE A DEVOTIONAL BOOK FOR THE LIVING WORD OF GOD. Don’t fret about whether you are reading the “right” thing. You asked God to direct you so He will. 1 John 5:14,15 Even if you miss His direction, God’s Word is God’s Word; He will meet you because of the desire in your heart. James 4:8 When you spend time with God, incorporate the following: 1. Ask God to bless your time. Psalm 119:18 2. Read from His Word. Matthew 4:4 3. Meditate on what you read - that is, think soberly and quietly about God, Who He is, what He has done, what He has written. Ask yourself, “What is God saying to me?” Is it - a. A promise to claim? b. An example or guide for my daily life? c. A command to obey? d. A revelation of sin in my life? Don’t try to go too fast or read too much. One verse that you can hold onto all day is better than three chapters that you’ve forgotten a few hours later. Psalm 119:11 4. Talk to God but keep it short, Praise Him according to Psalm 150:2-6 Thank Him. Ephesians 5:20 Confess your sins. 1 John 1:9 Pray for your family and others. Philippians 2:4 Pray for yourself. Philippians 4:6, James 1:5, Job 36:5 Pray for those in authority. 1 Timothy 2:1,2 Relax. Matthew 11:28-30
Give God time to talk back. Spend the bulk of your alone-time listening to Him talk back to you. Cultivate listening.
