DELIVERANCE Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. John 8:3 Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage. Galatians 5:1 Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Corinthians 3;17 Can a Christian be demon-possessed? Who did Jesus cast demons out of?
Jesus delivered those with faith - even good church people! When we are born again, our spirit is set free. Growing in faith, recognizing and getting rid of the demonic in our souls is what it means to "work out our salvation with fear and trembling." Deliverance of unbelievers is for the purpose of enabling them to receive eternal salvation. Deliverance of believers is for the purpose of enabling us to experience "Thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven." Deliverance is our command: Matthew 10:7-8 -Jesus speaking to the 12: And as you go, preach, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give. Mark 6:12,13 - The 12: So they went out and preached that people should repent. And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them. Luke 9:1 - Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. The term "possessed" in the Greek means to be exercised by a demon, to have, be vexed with, possessed with a devil. From a word that means a demon or supernatural spirit of a bad nature. (Strongs 1139) This word is used in: Matthew 4:24 Matthew 8:16 Matthew 8:28 Matthew 8:33 Matthew 9:32 Matthew 12:22 Mark 1:32 Mark 5:15,16,18 Luke 8:36 Another Greek translated "possessed" is used in certain tenses only - to hold, use, diseased, possession (Strongs 2192). It is used in: Acts 8:7 Acts 16:16 Many Christians use the words afflicted, demonized and bothered relative to demon possession, yet these terms are not used in the New Testament. Neither are they a part of the Greek meaning of a word used in connection with demon possession. Not every problem is a demon. It can be SIN or EMOTIONAL ILLNESS. Always ask, “Why is the demon there? If the person has mental illness, get an expert involved. A chemical imbalance combined with sin can create an atmosphere for the demonic, but you still need to deal with the chemical imbalance. If the problem is demonic, look for the hook. What right does the demon have to be there? Why was it invited? It is impossible to be delivered of demons without repentance. “Hooks” that open the door for the demonic: a. Real or perceived rejection. (difficult to deal with) b. Victimization - a spirit of trauma can enter c. Anger - hurt turned outward d. Bitterness - Is there a root of bitterness? e. Hatred - better than thou attitude - pride - racism f. Unforgiveness. “Unforgiveness is demon food,” says Doris Wagner There can be no deliverance until you can forgive. If they aren’t willing to forgive, wait until they are willing. g. Deliberate sin - can get or have a seared conscience. People not raised with a sense of morality, often say they no longer do a particular sin not because they feel it is wrong in their conscience, but because they read in the Word of God that it is wrong. h. Ignorant that it is sin. Example: Christians reading horoscopes. People who try to help others and in the counseling process, the demonic transfers to them. i. Witchcraft or the occult. Must renounce all involvement and break any curses put on them. Repentance is also necessary in order to break the curses put on them by God. See Deuteronomy 28:15-68 j. Soul-ties. Especially with past sex partners. Sex causes two people to become one flesh. Therefore, demons can be transferred from one to the other during sex. 1 Corinthians 6:17 k. Word curses l. Vows.
m. Iniquities of the fathers (to the third and fourth generations). Sin is something you do. Iniquity is your predisposition to sin. 8. Before you administer deliverance. A. Are you living a life of faith according to John 14:11-17 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever - the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. and James 1:5-8? If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. B. Do you have any known sin in your life? C. Are you free of the demonic yourself. You will set yourself up for serious problems if you attempt to deliver someone else at the same time you are going through deliverance yourself. 9. Do you hear voices? 10. Have you made an allegiance with anyone or anything? 11. To whom (or what) were you dedicated ? Revelation 18:11-13 11. How to discern the demonic. a. Word of knowledge b. Gift of discernment c. Observation of their life over a long period of time. d. Discover word-curses e. Inductive and deductive questioning
