BAPTISM Scripture talks about several kinds of baptism. This is a quick overview of the three most people think of when the term baptism is used. In all three types, it must be understood that baptism, by definition, means to cover fully. Baptism of blood: The need to have sin covered and rolled away was necessary from the fall of man, up to Jesus’ death on the cross. You must be born again. John 3:3; I Peter 1:3, 23 The baptism of blood is salvation for Eternity. Baptism of water: Matt. 3:13-17 - Jesus’ baptism Mark 16:15-16 - the great commission Acts 2:36-41 - the day of Pentecost Acts 8:26-39 - the Ethiopian eunuch Acts 22:16 - Saul of Tarsus Romans 6:3-4 I Peter 3:18 - 21 Water baptism is burying the old man that died when the person received the baptism of blood which took away his/her sins. Water baptism brings salvation for this life even as Noah’s water baptism was for his earth life. Baptism of Spirit: When a person is born again, he/she receives the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. When we receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the person receives the power of the Spirit to witness and to live a life of power. For a more complete explanation, see the teaching on The Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Matt. 3:11 John 20:19-23 Acts 1:5, 8 Acts 8:15-17 Acts 9:17, 18 Acts 10: 38-47 Acts 11: 15-17 Acts 19: 2-6 F.B. Meyer: “God does not fill with His Holy Spirit those who believe in the fullness of the Spirit or those who desire Him, but those who obey Him.” Watchman Nee: “The power of the Holy Spirit is for work; the indwelling is for fruit. The Holy Spirit bestows gifts and fruit. His job is to “convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment. “ John 16:8. “He will guide you into all the truth” vs. 13 (Jesus) and He will glorify Jesus. vs. 14 Jesus manifested the Divine ability of God and the Divine character. In us, the ability is shown forth by the gifts of the spirit. The character produces the fruit of the Spirit. Both are necessary for a well-balanced Christian life. Ability without character is dangerous. Matt. 7:22, 23 Character without ability leaves one without power to be effective in our Christian witness. When Peter cut off the servant’s ear when they came to take Jesus to trial, Jesus needed and showed the fruit of love, forgiveness, longsuffering. Matt. 26:53. He needed the gift of healing to prove that He had authority to forgive sins. Matt. 9:6. We are to “grow up in all aspects into Him” - to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” Eph. 4:15, 13 What does it mean…one baptism? Ephesians 4:5 This question is answered in 1 John 5:5-8 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is He who came by water and blood – Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood, and it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear witness in heaven; the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth; the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.
